Welcome to Week 21! As you move further into your second trimester, you might be noticing some significant shifts, both with your baby's activity and in your own body. This week, your baby is often compared to the size of a carrot, measuring around 267mm. It's a time of continued growth and development, and for many, a period where the pregnancy feels increasingly real and tangible.

What's happening with baby

At 21 weeks, your baby is becoming more and more active, and their movements are likely feeling stronger and more distinct. They're practicing important reflexes like sucking and swallowing, and their taste buds are developing, allowing them to experience flavors from the amniotic fluid. Their skin is still thin and translucent, but fat deposits are beginning to form, which will help with temperature regulation after birth. Sleep and wake cycles are also becoming more established, though they might not align with yours just yet! Organs continue to mature, and the nervous system is refining its connections, paving the way for more coordinated movements.

What you might be feeling

For many, Week 21 marks the beginning of more rapid weight gain, which is a natural and healthy part of supporting your baby's growth. You might notice your center of gravity shifting, leading to changes in posture. The stronger baby movements, often called 'quickening' when they first appear, are likely now more consistent and perhaps even visible from the outside. This can be a truly joyful and connecting experience. You might also continue to experience some common pregnancy symptoms like heartburn, swelling in your feet or ankles, or occasional leg cramps. Emotionally, many parents-to-be feel a growing sense of anticipation and connection, as the reality of meeting their baby draws closer.

A doula's lived take

In my experience as a birth doula, Week 21 is a wonderful time to lean into the sensations of pregnancy and truly connect with your baby. Those stronger movements are a beautiful way to start tuning into your baby's unique patterns. I often encourage clients to simply notice – what times of day is baby most active? What positions seem to encourage movement? This isn't about rigid tracking, but about cultivating a calm awareness of your baby's rhythms. As your body changes and weight gain becomes more noticeable, it's also a great opportunity to explore gentle movement that feels good for you, like walking or prenatal yoga, to support your back and overall comfort. Remember, you get to decide what feels most supportive for your body and your well-being during this time. We can explore options for comfort measures and how to communicate your needs effectively with your partner and care team, ensuring you feel clear and confident as your pregnancy progresses.

Questions worth asking your provider

As you navigate these changes, it can be helpful to have a conversation with your care provider about what to expect. You might ask about healthy weight gain ranges for your specific situation, strategies for managing any swelling or discomfort you're experiencing, and what to look for regarding baby's movements. It's always a good idea to discuss any new or concerning symptoms to ensure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions for your health and your baby's well-being. Your provider is your best resource for your specific situation.
