Welcome to week 23! This is a fascinating time in your pregnancy, often marked by a growing sense of connection and the significant milestone of viability. As your baby continues to develop, you might find yourself reflecting on the journey so far and looking ahead to the exciting weeks to come.

What's happening with baby

Your baby is now approximately the size of a large mango, and their growth is truly remarkable. This week marks a crucial point as baby's lungs are rapidly developing, preparing for life outside the womb. While still very delicate, the chances of survival outside the womb significantly increase from this point with specialized medical support. Their tiny body is also starting to lay down more fat, which will help with temperature regulation after birth. They're becoming more responsive to sounds, and you might notice them reacting to your voice or familiar music. It’s a wonderful time to engage with your baby through gentle touch and sound.

What you might be feeling

Many pregnant people in their 23rd week report feeling more connected to their baby, often due to more consistent and stronger fetal movements. This can bring a wave of joy and reassurance. You might also be experiencing some common second-trimester sensations like Braxton Hicks contractions – a tightening of your uterus that usually isn't painful. Your body is doing incredible work, and it's natural for these changes to bring both physical sensations and emotional shifts. It's a time of growing awareness, both physically and emotionally, as you prepare for the next phase of pregnancy.

A doula's lived take

From my perspective as a birth doula, week 23 often brings a unique blend of excitement and contemplation. The concept of viability can be a powerful one, prompting many parents to think more deeply about their birth preferences and what kind of support feels right for them. This is a beautiful opportunity to lean into that curiosity. You get to decide what information resonates with you and what choices align with your values. One option might be to start gentle conversations with your partner or support system about your hopes and intentions for birth. Remember, clear and confident communication with your care provider is always a valuable tool. This is your pregnancy, and your autonomy in making informed decisions is paramount.

Questions worth asking your provider

As you move through this week, it can be helpful to have a few questions ready for your next appointment. Consider discussing what signs of preterm labor to look out for, especially since you're approaching the viability threshold. You might also want to ask about the typical frequency and intensity of fetal movements at this stage, so you have a clear understanding of what's normal for your baby. If you're feeling any new or unusual sensations, like persistent Braxton Hicks or pelvic pressure, bringing these up can offer peace of mind. Your provider is your best resource for your specific situation, and open dialogue helps ensure you feel supported and informed every step of the way.

Common questions

Is it normal to feel baby move more now?+

Yes, as baby grows and gains strength, their movements often become more distinct and frequent. Many parents find this a comforting connection, and it's a wonderful way to bond. Keep noticing these patterns, and if you have any concerns about changes in movement, your provider is your best resource.
