Welcome to Week 17! As you move further into your second trimester, you might find a bit more ease and energy compared to those early weeks. This is a time of steady growth for your baby and noticeable changes for your body, often bringing a renewed sense of connection and excitement.

What's happening with baby

This week, your baby is approximately the size of a turnip, measuring around 130mm from crown to rump. One of the most significant developments is the continued accumulation of fat beneath their skin. This isn't just about chubby cheeks; these fat deposits are crucial for regulating body temperature after birth and providing energy. Their skeletal system is also continuing to harden, transitioning from soft cartilage to bone, especially in the long bones of the arms and legs. Your baby's senses are refining, too. While their eyes are still fused shut, they can likely perceive light, and their hearing is developing further, allowing them to potentially respond to sounds from outside the womb. It's a truly remarkable time of foundational development.

What you might be feeling

For many, the second trimester brings a welcome shift in energy levels, with less nausea and fatigue than the first. You might find yourself feeling more like yourself again, which can be a wonderful relief. Physically, your belly is likely becoming more prominent, making your pregnancy more visible to the world. This can be a joyful milestone, but it might also bring new sensations like round ligament pain – a sharp, brief ache on one or both sides of your lower abdomen as your uterus grows and stretches its supporting ligaments. Your breasts may continue to grow, and you might notice changes in your skin, such as increased pigmentation in certain areas. Emotionally, you might feel a deeper connection to your baby, perhaps even anticipating those first flutters of movement, often called 'quickening,' which can happen anytime between weeks 16 and 22.

A doula's lived take

As a doula, I often hear from clients around this time that they're feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity about what's next. The visible belly can be a beautiful reminder of the life growing within you, and it's a wonderful opportunity to start intentionally connecting with your baby. One option might be to gently talk or sing to your belly, knowing your baby's hearing is developing. This period of relative calm in the second trimester can also be a great time to reflect on your preferences for your birth experience. What kind of environment feels supportive to you? What questions are coming up about labor and delivery? There's no right or wrong answer, only what feels aligned for you. Remember, you get to decide what feels best for your body and your family. Gathering evidence-based information now can help you feel calm, clear, and confident as your pregnancy progresses, making informed decisions every step of the way.

Questions worth asking your provider

As your body continues to change, it's always helpful to maintain open communication with your care provider. You might consider asking about:

  • What to expect during your upcoming anatomy scan, usually performed around 18-22 weeks.
  • Ways to manage any new discomforts, such as round ligament pain or backaches.
  • Guidelines for exercise and activity levels as your pregnancy progresses.
  • Any specific concerns you have about your diet or nutrient intake.

Your provider is your best resource for your specific situation, and bringing your questions to your appointments can help you feel more grounded and supported.

Baby is about the size of a turnip.

Common questions

Is it normal to feel occasional aches in my lower belly?+

Yes, as your uterus grows, the ligaments supporting it can stretch, leading to what's known as round ligament pain. It's often a sharp but brief sensation. If it's persistent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms, always check with your provider for reassurance.
