Welcome to Week 16 of your pregnancy, a time when many parents begin to feel a deeper connection with their growing baby. You're now firmly in the second trimester, often called the "golden trimester" by some, as energy levels may be returning and early pregnancy discomforts might be easing.

What's happening with baby

Your baby is truly making strides this week, growing to about the size of an avocado. They're experiencing tiny growth spurts, lengthening and filling out. Their muscles are becoming stronger, allowing for more coordinated movements. While you might not feel every wiggle, your baby is actively exploring their space, practicing movements that will be essential after birth. Their senses are also developing, with eyes beginning to perceive light and sound waves reaching their ears, even if they're still muffled. It's a period of significant refinement and preparation for the world outside.

What you might be feeling

For many, Week 16 brings a welcome shift in energy. Nausea often subsides, and fatigue may lessen, allowing you to feel a bit more like yourself. Your belly is likely becoming more noticeable, and you might find yourself needing to adjust your wardrobe. The most exciting development for many is the potential for quickening – those first, subtle fetal movements. These can feel like gentle flutters, gas bubbles, or even a soft tapping. It's a deeply personal experience, and it's perfectly normal if you haven't felt it yet, especially if this is your first pregnancy. Emotionally, you might feel a renewed sense of excitement and wonder as the reality of your pregnancy becomes more tangible.

A doula's lived take

Feeling those first movements, whether they're distinct kicks or just a whisper of a flutter, is such a profound moment. As a doula, I've seen how this connection can bring a wave of calm and confidence. It's a gentle reminder of the life unfolding within you. There's no "right" way to feel it or a specific day it should happen. Every body is unique, and every baby moves on their own timeline. Some parents feel it earlier, others later. The key is to tune into your own body, noticing subtle changes and trusting your intuition. This is a beautiful opportunity to start a gentle dialogue with your baby, perhaps by resting your hands on your belly and simply being present. Remember, this is your pregnancy, and you get to decide how you connect with these milestones. One option might be to start a small journal to note any sensations you feel, no matter how fleeting.

Questions worth asking your provider

As you navigate this exciting week, having clear information can bring so much ease. Consider discussing these points with your OB or midwife:

  • What are some signs of quickening, and what should I do if I'm unsure if I'm feeling it?
  • Are there any specific exercises or movements that are particularly beneficial during the second trimester?
  • What nutritional considerations are important as my energy levels increase?
  • What can I expect at my upcoming appointments in terms of screenings or discussions?

Your provider is your best resource for your specific situation, and having these conversations can help you feel more informed and confident in your choices.

Baby is about the size of an avocado.

Many first-time parents notice these gentle flutters between weeks 16-25, though it can vary. It's often described as gas bubbles or a butterfly sensation. Tuning into your body's subtle cues can help you recognize it.
