Welcome to week 32! As you move further into your third trimester, you might notice a shift in your energy and focus, as the anticipation of meeting your baby grows. This week, your baby is roughly the size of a jicama, a root vegetable that's surprisingly dense and full of good things, much like your little one now.

What's happening with baby

Your baby is making significant strides in their development, getting ready for life outside the womb. A key milestone this week is the shedding of lanugo, the fine, downy hair that has covered their body. This hair often disappears as a layer of fat builds up underneath the skin, helping with temperature regulation. Your baby's bones are continuing to harden, though their skull bones remain soft and flexible for birth. Importantly, they are also building up iron reserves, which will be crucial for their first few months of life. Their lungs are maturing rapidly, and they continue to practice breathing movements, preparing for that very first breath.

What you might be feeling

Around 32 weeks, many pregnant individuals experience a mix of physical sensations and emotional shifts. You might notice Braxton Hicks contractions becoming more frequent or intense – these are your body's practice contractions, getting ready for labor. Fatigue can return, as your body is working incredibly hard to support your growing baby. Pelvic pressure might increase as your baby settles lower, and you might find yourself needing to use the restroom more often. Emotionally, you could be feeling a blend of excitement, nervousness, and a strong nesting instinct, prompting you to organize and prepare your home for your baby's arrival. It's all a very normal part of this journey.

A doula's lived take

From my experience supporting many parents through this stage, week 32 often brings a heightened awareness of the approaching birth. It's a time when questions about labor, comfort, and postpartum care start to feel very real. This is a wonderful opportunity to lean into that curiosity and gather information that helps you feel calm, clear, and confident. One option might be to start thinking about your comfort preferences for labor – what sounds supportive to you? Perhaps it's warm water, gentle movement, or specific breathing techniques. Remember, you get to decide what feels right for you and your family. Having open conversations with your partner and care provider about your preferences can be incredibly empowering. It's not about having a rigid plan, but about exploring options and understanding your agency in the process.

Questions worth asking your provider

As you near the finish line, having clear communication with your care team is invaluable. Consider discussing:

  • What are the signs of labor I should be looking for, and when should I call?
  • What are the options for pain management or comfort measures available at my birth location?
  • Can we review my birth preferences or discuss any questions I have about the birth process?
  • What are some signs of concern or when should I seek immediate medical attention?

These conversations can help you feel more prepared and grounded as you approach your baby's arrival. Your provider is your best resource for your specific situation.

Baby is about the size of a jicama.

Common questions

Is it normal for me to feel more tired again at 32 weeks?+

Yes, it's very common. Your body is working incredibly hard, carrying more weight, and preparing for birth. Prioritizing rest and gentle activity can be really supportive during this time.
