What's happening with baby

This week is truly miraculous, even if you're not yet aware of the incredible changes unfolding. At approximately 0.1mm, your developing baby is no larger than a poppy seed, a tiny cluster of cells embarking on a monumental journey. This is the week of fertilization, where sperm meets egg, typically in the fallopian tube. Once fertilized, this single cell, now called a zygote, begins a rapid series of divisions. It travels down toward the uterus, transforming first into a morula – a solid ball of cells – and then into a blastocyst. The blastocyst is a hollow ball of cells, carefully organized, with an inner cell mass that will become the embryo, and an outer layer that will form the placenta. This tiny, intricate structure is preparing for implantation into the uterine wall, a crucial step for the pregnancy to continue. It's a testament to your body's innate wisdom, orchestrating these complex events with precision and grace.

What you might be feeling

At three weeks, it's very common to feel absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Most people aren't even aware they're pregnant yet! While your body is undergoing profound internal shifts, these changes are microscopic. Hormonal signals are just beginning to ripple through your system, but they're usually too subtle to cause noticeable symptoms. Some individuals, however, might experience a very faint sense of intuition, or perhaps a slight shift in energy. Towards the end of the week, as the blastocyst prepares to implant, a very small amount of implantation spotting – light pink or brown discharge – might occur. This is usually brief and much lighter than a typical period. It's a gentle reminder that even in these earliest days, your body is already working diligently to support this new life.

A doula's lived take

As a doula, I've had the privilege of witnessing the quiet beginnings of so many pregnancies. Week three is often a time of beautiful unknowing, where the body is doing incredible work behind the scenes. It's a powerful reminder that pregnancy is not always about what you can see or feel immediately. It's about trust – trust in your body's capabilities, and trust in the natural process. Even before you might have a positive pregnancy test, this is a wonderful time to lean into gentle self-care. Think about nourishing your body with wholesome foods, staying hydrated, and finding moments of calm. One option might be to simply acknowledge the potential for new life within you, and offer yourself grace and patience. This foundational week sets the stage, and honoring that quiet beginning can be a powerful practice. You get to decide how you want to approach this early phase, whether with eager anticipation or a gentle, watchful awareness.

Questions worth asking your provider

Even if you haven't confirmed your pregnancy yet, it's never too early to consider your overall wellness. If you're actively trying to conceive, or suspect you might be pregnant, you might want to discuss general health practices with your care provider. Questions could include ensuring your prenatal vitamin contains adequate folate, reviewing any medications you're currently taking, and discussing any pre-existing health conditions. Your provider is your best resource for personalized guidance. They can help you understand what to look for in the coming weeks and ensure you're setting a healthy foundation for pregnancy. Having these conversations early can bring a sense of clarity and confidence as you navigate this new chapter.

Common questions

Can I feel pregnant at 3 weeks?+

It's very unlikely to feel definitive pregnancy symptoms this early, as your body is just beginning its incredible work. Most changes are happening on a microscopic level, though some might notice subtle shifts later in the week.
