The second trimester often brings a sense of calm and connection, and at 22 weeks, you're likely feeling more in tune with the changes happening within your body. This is a time when many parents begin to truly visualize their baby, especially as movements become more consistent.

## What's happening with baby

Your baby is now approximately the size of a spaghetti squash, growing steadily and refining many of the systems they'll use outside the womb. This week marks a significant milestone: their unique fingerprints and footprints are fully formed and set for life. Beyond these intricate details, your baby's senses are rapidly developing. They're becoming more sensitive to touch, and their hearing is sharpening, allowing them to respond to sounds from outside your body. The eyes are also developing, though they'll remain closed for a bit longer. Fat layers are beginning to form under the skin, which will help with temperature regulation after birth, and their hair and nails continue to grow.

## What you might be feeling

Many pregnant individuals at 22 weeks report feeling more energetic than in the first trimester, though fatigue can still ebb and flow. You're likely feeling your baby's movements more regularly now – those gentle flutters might be turning into more distinct kicks and nudges. Your uterus is growing, which can lead to some new sensations, like Braxton Hicks contractions (often described as a tightening or hardening of your belly) or round ligament pain, a sharp, brief pain on one or both sides of your lower abdomen. Your balance might also feel a little different as your center of gravity shifts. Emotionally, this can be a time of excitement and anticipation, as you continue to bond with your baby and prepare for their arrival.

## A doula's lived take

From my experience as a doula, this stage of pregnancy is often a beautiful bridge between the initial overwhelm and the intense preparations for birth. It's a wonderful time to lean into curiosity about your body and your baby. When clients share their excitement about feeling those first consistent movements, I often encourage them to simply pause and connect. Take a moment to place your hands on your belly and acknowledge the life growing within. This isn't about doing anything specific, but rather about cultivating a gentle awareness. It's also a great time to start thinking about what truly helps you feel calm and supported. Perhaps it's a warm bath, a quiet walk, or simply carving out time for rest. You get to decide what feels right for you and your growing family.

Consider discussing any new aches or pains you're experiencing, such as persistent round ligament pain or frequent Braxton Hicks contractions, just to ensure everything is within expected parameters. You might also want to ask about what to expect regarding future appointments, including any upcoming screenings or tests.
