> Welcome to the second trimester! This week often brings a welcome shift in energy and a chance to feel more settled in your pregnancy.

As you step into week 14, you're officially entering the second trimester – a time many parents-to-be describe as a period of renewed energy and a bit more ease. For many, the intense nausea and fatigue of the first trimester begin to subside, allowing for a more comfortable experience.

This can be a wonderful time to connect more deeply with your body and your growing baby. You might start to feel more like yourself, or perhaps a new, more vibrant version of yourself. It's an opportunity to really lean into understanding the changes happening and to feel more confident in your choices.

## What's happening with baby

Your baby is now about the size of a lemon, measuring around 87mm from crown to rump. This week marks a period of rapid growth and development. Their tiny body is becoming more proportionate, and they're starting to look more like a miniature human. Facial features are becoming more distinct, and the neck is lengthening, allowing for more head movement. Internally, organs are continuing to mature, and the baby's reflexes are developing, though you won't feel these movements for a few more weeks. Hair is also beginning to grow on their head and body (lanugo), which helps to regulate temperature.

## What you might be feeling

Many pregnant people experience a significant decrease in morning sickness and fatigue as they enter the second trimester. This surge of energy can be incredibly welcome, allowing you to engage more fully in daily activities and perhaps even rediscover some of your pre-pregnancy routines. You might notice your bump becoming more visible, and you may need to start thinking about maternity clothing. Some people also experience a heightened sense of smell or changes in skin, like a "pregnancy glow" or perhaps some breakouts. Emotionally, the initial anxiety of the first trimester might give way to a feeling of calm and excitement, though it's completely normal for emotions to still fluctuate.

## A doula's lived take

From my experience as a doula, week 14 often feels like a turning point. It's a moment when many clients tell me they feel a sense of relief and a desire to really start planning and preparing with a clearer mind. This is a beautiful time to begin exploring your options for prenatal care, birth preferences, and postpartum support. You get to decide what feels right for you and your family. One option might be to start gentle movement practices, like prenatal yoga or walking, if you're feeling up to it. It's about listening to your body and making informed decisions that support your well-being. This renewed energy can be channeled into gaining clarity and confidence for the months ahead.

## Questions worth asking your provider

As you settle into the second trimester, it's a good time to discuss any lingering concerns or new questions with your care provider. Consider asking about:

* Your upcoming anatomy scan (often scheduled between weeks 18-22) and what to expect.
* Recommended prenatal exercise guidelines now that your energy may be returning.
* Any specific discomforts you might be experiencing, even if they seem minor.
* Nutritional guidance for the second trimester.

Remember, your provider is your best resource for your specific situation and medical advice. We're here to offer education and support so you can have calm, clear, and confident conversations with them.
